Japan is going to build a "Zeta-class" supercomputer based on next-generation (AI) technology!
Japan has recently announced the creation of a "Zeta-class" supercomputer based on ultra-high-power next-generation (AI) technology. Japanese technologists believe that it will be able to work at least 1,000 times faster and more accurately than any powerful supercomputing system currently in use in the world. The country has named this high-speed supercomputer of its future as the 'Fugaku Next' supercomputer.
Japan plans to start building the 'Fugaku Next' supercomputer under an ambitious project in 2025 and is very optimistic about it being fully operational by 2030. Currently, Japan's famous tech giant Fujitsu and the RIKEN Research Institute are working together to design it. Earlier, in 2020, these two tech giants jointly built the 'Fugaku' supercomputer and it was launched for use in 2021.
And the speed of Japan's 'Fugaku' supercomputer, which is currently operational, is currently 537.21 petaflops per second (RPC). Which was considered the world's most powerful supercomputer until 2022. Moreover, as of November 2024, the 'Fugaku' supercomputer is the world's 6th top local supercomputing system. It is installed at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) in Japan.
However, according to the ranking of the Top500 of last November, the American-made El Capitan supercomputer has emerged as the world's top local and powerful supercomputing system. And the speed of this (Hewlett Packard Enterprise El Capitan) supercomputer is incredibly 2.746 exa-flops or 2,746.38 peta-flops (rPic) per second. It has been installed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Institute in America.
Meanwhile, the implementation of this new ambitious "Zeta-class" computing system project in Japan may cost (estimated) a total of approximately 761 million dollars. According to Japanese technologists, the speed of this new generation supercomputer will be at least about 1 zeta-flops (zetaFLOPS). Where 1,000 exa-FLOPS or floating point operations per second (FLOPS) is considered to be 1.0 zeta-FLOPS speed. Here (FLOPS) means floating-point operations per second.
No high-speed supercomputer currently in use in the world has yet achieved zeta-FLOPS speed. However, the world's first powerful exa-scale supercomputer, the American 'Frontier' supercomputing system, debuted in 2022. It will remain the world's most powerful and fastest supercomputer until June 2024.
The high-tech 'Frontier' advanced computing system or supercomputer, originally developed by the American Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HP), has a peak speed of 2.055 exa-FLOPS (FLOPS) per second. It is located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States. Moreover, according to the latest report of Top500, America has occupied 5 of the world's top 10 local and powerful supercomputers.
